Own The Night by Lady Antebellum

"Own the Night" is the third studio album by Lady Antebellum and picks up right where they left off with last year's "Need You Now." They have an impressive track record which includes being awarded Top New Group by the Academy of Country Music and New Artist of the Year by the Country Music Association in 2008. They were then nominated for a total of 4 Grammy Awards in 2009 and 2010, winning one of them for Best Country Performance for the song "I Run To You." In 2010 they won Top Vocal Group and Song of the Year ("Need You Now") at the ACM Awards and took home 5 Grammy Awards in 2011.

The first track, "We Owned The Night" is the perfect start to the album: An upbeat tune that has lots of energy and will make you jump out of your chair and start to dance. The lyrics are nothing short of poetic and inspired by dreams of a once in a lifetime moment of passion. Singer Hillary Scott says the album was named after these sentiments. The mandolin that Dave Haywood plays adds an amazing texture that enhances the song with charisma and a hint of bluegrass influence. "Just a Kiss" was the first single and made its debut last spring on American Idol. It debuted at number 7 on Billboard's top 100, the highest debut by a country artist in over 52 years. "Dancing Away With My Heart" was co-written with Josh Kear, the same person who helped write "Need You Now." The song is everything a country tune should be: deep, meaningful lyrics, excellent musicianship, and passionate singing and playing. The song is so familiar I was humming away with it the first time I listened. Another highlight is "As You Turn Away," a song with a catchy hook and incredible vocal melodies and harmonies. If you liked Lady Antebellum's two previous albums, or if you're a fan of country music, you'll love this. Highly recommended!!

Gotye (pronounced: go-ti-yay) is the stage moniker of Belgium-born Wally de Backer, who moved to Australia at a young age and it is there that he built his musical career. Gotye has been at it for a number of years as part of the Aussie band the Basics but also issuing several solo albums: in 2003 there was "Boardface" and in 2006 "Like Drawing Blood" (remixed the next year as "Mixed Blood"). Now after a 5 year absence comes the new album. If you're not familiar with the sound of Gotye, the best comparison I can think of would be a strangely appealing mix of Beck, George Michael and Seal, if you can believe that.


"Making Mirrors" (originally released in August, 2011; 12 tracks; 42 min.) starts off with the 1 min. appetizer that is the title track, only then then dive into "Easy Way Out". The third track is "Somebody That I Used to Know", a duet with New Zealand singer Kimbra, and the single that has propelled this album out of obscurity last year into a megahit in Australia and Europe (check out also the video of this song, not to be missed!). "Smoke and Mirrors" is an irresitable stomper. "I Feel Better" sounds like Motown-revisted. "Don't Worry, We'll Be Watching You" is a reggae tune. The musical flavors are all over on this album, and as a result this is a very diverse-sounding and immensly enjoyable Gotye album.


This album was released outside the US last August. I picked up the physical CD on a recent home visit to Belgium, where the album remains a top seller 5 months after its release. While the album has been available as an import here on Amazon, the album is finally getting a proper release in the US in early 2012. It's not too late to jump on the Gotye band wagon! His upcoming US tour is already sold out in most venues. Meanwhile "Making Mirrors" is highly recommended!

Kid Cudi has been in the music business for almost 5 years now, and with this 3rd studio album we have a brand new Cudi for the masses. I have been a fan of Cudi since he dropped his debut album "Man on the Moon: The End of Day" back in 09 and I have been constantly on the lookout for any type of music this guy has been dishing out ever since. WZRD is a duo consisting of Kid Cudi and his long-time producer Dot da Genius and with this long relevancy still intact, they decided to drop an LP composed of different sounds of rock music. Needless to say, this is nothing similar to the "usual" Kid Cudi , this is comepletely its own monster and I have to say it is pretty darn good stuff.

Kid Cudi exploring rock music is nothing new, he has attempted to fuse rock with his sound on Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, albeit this is sonically his musical home genre (unlike Lil Wayne's horrendous Rebirth album) Cudi seems almost right at home when he is singing on this album. The album's sound is diverse ranging from hard rock cuts like "High Off Life" to more accoustic rock such as "Efflictim". The production provided by Dot da Genius is pretty well done, although almost every track has distorted backdrops (but that is probably intentional). Kid Cudi has been synonymous with Marijuana, his past 2 albums have been inspired by the great pot leaf which has pushed Cudi to new limits and ideas for the past 3 years. When news got out that he has now become sober, there has been speculation by Cudi fans alike if he can make the same calibur of music throughout an entire album without any drugs in his system. The answer sadly is NO, it is not the same Kid Cudi from the last 2 albums whatsoever.

While I have nothing against sober Cudi, you can tell some of the creativity has been altered. Kid Cudi even said himself that without drugs in his system he had writers block for a good 6 monthes. BUT, in retrospect this is a more mature Cudder with no profanity filled with more positive messages in his lyrics. The sound of Cudi's voice has never sounded better, and the production on this album only compliements Cudi's unique singing voice. Songs like "Teleport 2 Me, Jamie" and "Love Hard" are perfect examples of his wonderful unique melodic tone. The only bad thing I can't get over is that none of the material on WZRD eclipses Kid Cudi's earlier work from the Man on the Moon series. Obviosly this is a WZRD album not a Kid Cudi album (per se), but as a fan I can't say this album is as innovative as his past 2 albums. What this album has to offer is a great fusion of rock songs, not every song is a hit but it is definitely worth a listen.

This song is awesome!! Everytime I hear it, I just want to hit the dance floor and bust a move. The Wanted is a great band from the UK and I can't wait for their album to cross the Atlantic Ocean into the States!!! The States need more groups like these guys.
